Quick Virus Update – Facebook

We had thought we had gotten rid of the virus last night, but this morning we found out that we still had it. But McAfee took care of it almost immediately.

We did, however, find out what caused the virus. We went looking to find what had caused it, and somehow we got it from Facebook! There’s been a virus going around on Facebook, and we were on it that night when we got the virus. If you’ve been on Facebook in the past few days, we suggest you scan your computer.

Avoid Getting Trojans (A Deadly PC Virus)

We’re having difficulty with one of our computers, the one we normally use to write these blog posts. We apparently got a Trojan last night, and when we turned it back on this morning to post there were all these popups trying to make us download anti-spyware software. (it kept saying that we didn’t have spyware protection, when we have both McAfee and Ad-Aware) Unfortunately, it shut down that computer’s automatic protection, allowing it to continue doing things on our computer.

We’ve now scanned it several times, and these are the file names we’ve come up with (you can use this for reference if you get a Trojan. These are the file names you want to delete. If you find anymore names that are not listed here, please notify us through a comment so we can add it):

  • iebtm
  • iebtmm
  • iebtu
  • iebu
  • wcm
  • wcs /!\
  • wcu
  • Warning Center
  • Windows Safety Alert

We suggest that you DO NOT download any of the anti-spyware things that they want you to. That is the virus, and it is hard to get rid of. Also, while the virus is still on your computer, do not type in any passwords, or access your emails. Also, do not download any anti-spyware that says unknown publisher. Lastly, here are two ways you can tell if a virus is on your computer (if either of these come out true, scan your computer ASAP):

  • If somehow an internet toolbar was downloaded, without you doing it.
  • If your homepage has been changed and you’re the only one who has access to your computer, that is a sure sign that you have a virus.
